Brian E. Smith, MBA, JD
Assistant Vice Chancellor, UC San Diego Health Sciences Affairs
Mr. Smith is assistant vice chancellor for Health Sciences Affairs. In this role, he serves on behalf of the vice chancellor in matters relating to Health Sciences’ professional schools, departments and academic affiliations. His scope of responsibility includes Health Sciences education, research and general administration, and he serves as the vice chancellor’s point of contact with Health Sciences Development, and Marketing and Communications, as well as with the senior leadership of UC San Diego Health System.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health Sciences, Mr. Smith served for six years as assistant vice president for Administration and chief of staff in the office of the vice president for Finance and Administration at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Among his stellar contributions in that role, Mr. Smith was instrumental in gaining legislative authority for a police department, managing the renovation of a police department building, and coordinating the University of Oregon’s hosting of the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field — a combined $60 million boost to the local economy.
From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Smith worked with the Technology Transfer Office at the University of Oregon. Prior to that, he worked as an attorney in Corvallis, Oregon, as a committee administrator with the Oregon Legislative Assembly, and as a program analyst, and an assistant general counsel for the FBI in Washington, DC.
Mr. Smith received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon. He earned his MBA and JD from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. After graduation, Brian was selected as a Presidential Management Fellow with the federal government.
