Clinical Affiliations

Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego and Children’s Specialists of San Diego

In 2001, physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's, and Children's Specialists of San Diego (CSSD) unified pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs, creating a university-affiliated children's health system to serve the region. Over the past two decades, an extensive list of joint programs has developed, with many physicians and researchers playing a role at both institutions.

This affiliation has consolidated the clinical, teaching and research and public service programs of the UCSD School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics with San Diego's only health care system dedicated to the health and well-being of children.

In 2009, this partnership was furthered strengthened by the creation of Rady Children's Specialist of San Diego, a Medical Foundation.

Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System

The Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System’s 355-bed hospital is located adjacent to the School of Medicine campus and plays an integral role in UC San Diego’s educational, research and clinical missions. UCSD medical faculty serve as the medical staff of the VASDHS.

St. Jude Children's Hospital

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Through an alliance established in 2007, leading biomedical researchers from UC San Diego are collaborating with colleagues at St. Jude to better understand the causes and improve the treatment of catastrophic childhood diseases, including cancer, and work toward the ultimate goal of improving cure rates.

The alliance is designed to encourage and facilitate collaborative research that is of great interest to St. Jude, while allowing patients in the San Diego area to continue to receive medical care close to their homes. This exciting collaboration brings promising experimental therapies for children to San Diego, while joining together the talents of the UCSD research community with those of St. Jude.

Sharp Memorial Hospital Joint Bone Marrow Transplant Program

In 1999, UC San Diego and Sharp HealthCare combined forces to establish a jointly managed bone marrow transplantation program (BMT). The collaboration enhanced regional bone marrow and stem cell services and improved availability of services for local patients.

Today, the UCSD/Sharp Joint Bone Marrow Transplant Program provides a full array of bone marrow transplant services including traditional autologous bone marrow, allogeneic bone marrow transplants and peripheral stem cell transplantation. Together, Sharp and UCSD are conducting clinical trials and developing new technologies to advance cancer treatment in San Diego. It is the largest BMT program in San Diego, one of the largest in California, and a national leader in physician expertise and state-of-the-art treatment.
