Your generous support helps us find ways to defeat cancer and provide the most compassionate care possible to patients and families. Your investment in our mission makes a difference today, and in the future. Consider these reasons:
1. We're one of the top-ranked centers in the nation.
U.S. News & World Report's top 50 for cancer care, and the National Cancer Institute has designated Moores Cancer Center as a “Comprehensive Cancer Center.”
Find out why that's important.
2. We're a leader in research.
Our investigators have a single focus: defeating cancer. Our research is helping to change the face of cancer through development of new technologies for better detection and treatment, more effective drugs, novel surgical approaches and innovative prevention strategies. Research conducted at UC San Diego is among the most highly cited in the world, and has placed us 7th for scientific impact among U.S. universities.
3. We bring a team of specialists to each patient.
Our team approach means that specialists, including surgeons, physicians, pathologists, radiologists, nurses, social workers, genetic counselors and others, meet weekly to discuss the best options available for each patient. Using the advice from this group of experts, patients can then decide with their primary care physician on the best course of treatment.
4. We care for the whole person, not just the disease.
Quality of life for patients and their loved ones is a top priority. Our
Patient & Family Support Service provides for psychological, practical, spiritual and advocacy needs. Our program was highlighted recently as a national model in a major report by the prestigious Institute of Medicine.
5. We believe that every cancer patient should be free of pain.
Our Palliative Care program is a widely known and respected clinical service dedicated to alleviating cancer pain and related symptoms that affect quality of life such as nausea, fatigue, loss of sleep and depression. Through the program patients have access to a wide variety of treatment options, including medications, nerve deadening and stimulation techniques, chiropractic, and integrative (or alternative) medicine techniques ranging from acupuncture and therapeutic touch to hypnosis and biofeedback.
6. We advance patient care with leading-edge technology.
Powerful new radiology technology enables us to perform tests and procedures that are faster, more accurate and less invasive. We were the first to offer full-field digital mammography to the community. Our trilogy linear accelerator offers virtually unmatched precision, power and speed in pinpointing and destroying tumors anywhere in the body, including tiny lesions in the brain.
7. We offer more hope through clinical trials.
At any given time, Moores Cancer Center has approximately 120 open
clinical trials, which offer patients the opportunity to have early access to tomorrow’s potential new treatments.
8. We reach out to improve the health of our community … and beyond.
community outreach programs focus on increasing access to health care and improving the health of county residents, particularly in medically underserved populations, which include the African-American, Hispanic, Pan-Asian, and Deaf communities. We offer free community services such as cooking classes and lectures through our
Healing Foods Kitchen. We are also the home of the
California Smokers’ Helpline, a free, telephone-based smoking cessation service that has assisted more than 458,000 callers statewide.
9. We're training the next generation of cancer leaders.
As part of the University of California, San Diego, one of our missions is to educate tomorrow’s cancer physicians and scientists. With a faculty that is among the best in the world, UC San Diego attracts the brightest and most promising students who go on to take their place at the front lines in the fight against cancer.
10. We lead with innovation.
Innovation is the backbone of progress, and Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health is well known for its culture of innovation. A prime example is our NanoTumor Center – one of only seven federally funded Centers for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNE) in the nation. We are also the lead center for a federally funded national consortium to develop new therapies for a major type of leukemia, an entirely new approach to tackling a difficult cancer. And Moores Cancer Center is the hub of a thriving local research effort into cancer stem cells, with the hope to ultimately stop cancer at its earliest point, or even before it starts.
