HIPAA Training

The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires that the University train all workforce members about the University HIPAA Policies and those specific HIPAA required procedures that may affect the work you do for the University. Workforce members include all UCSD Health Sciences salaried employees and non-salaried personnel, voluntary physicians with staff privileges, all physicians and associate staff members with medical staff privileges, volunteers, registry personnel and temporary personnel and other health professions students and trainees.

Privacy and Security Training for all Health Science Workforce Members (Mandatory Training)

The Annual HIPAA Privacy/Security training course is designed to help workforce:

  • Understand what information must be protected under state and federal privacy laws
  • Understand your role in maintaining privacy and security of protected health information (PHI)
  • Understand patient rights regarding access to and use of their medical information
  • Understand your role with adhering to data security standards and responsibility for reporting incidents
  • Understand the consequences for non-compliance

The University of California requires that its workforce members - anyone who works with or may see health, financial, or confidential information with personal identifiers - to complete an annual training course. Access to confidential information is limited to the minimum necessary standard and work-related purposes. Report privacy incidents and breaches promptly. To Access the Training Course

Please visit mycourses.ucsd.edu and follow the log in instructions. Once signed in, type "HIPAA' without the quotation marks, in the search box on the left hand side of the page. Click "Go". Click on the course name "Annual HIPAA 2012". About halfway down the page you will see the course description and a button that says "start". Click on the button and wait while the course is loaded. You will then follow the prompts to complete the course, making sure that when you get to the last page, you click the "agree" button to confirm that you have read the Privacy and Security Training course and confidentiality statement and to receive course credit.

Privacy Policies

UC San Diego Health's privacy policies are available to workforce members on the Health Intra-net site (http://mcpolicy.ucsd.edu/) for MCPs.
