Central Nervous System Development and Dysfunction

Research Description
A disproportionately large number of genes in the vertebrate genome encodes for cell recognition molecules that mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. This likely reflects an evolutionary trend towards increasingly more complex cellular interactions in higher metazoans. The highest diversity of such interactions is found in the central nervous system (CNS), where thousands of different neuronal subtypes are connected into defined neuronal circuits. We employ mouse genetics, genomics, cell biology, biochemistry, and imaging technology to analyze the function of cell recognition molecules during the development of neuronal circuits in the CNS. A second project aims at elucidating the mechanisms by which cell recognition molecules have evolved to control the function of mechanosensory hair cells in the inner ear. Mutations in genes for cell recognition molecules have been linked to a variety of human diseases including deafness. We are studying the function of the human disease genes in mouse model systems and identify novel genes that cause deafness. For Publications see www.scripps.edu/cb/mueller/
