My current and future research interests are directed in three different fronts.  One aspect of my work is to use molecular, cellular, and whole animal approaches to understand physiology/pathophysiology of chronic pain in different pain systems. My laboratory utilizes a combination of in vitro and in vivo techniques to study the mechanisms behind neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, and diabetic neuropathy.  My second area of focus is studying the effects of general and local anesthetics in modulating host immunity to various viral and bacterial infections.  My emphasis as a clinician scientist is to translate findings in the basic science to effective therapy that can be applied in clinical trials and eventually be used in patients.  To this end, the third area of focus is nanomedicine (application of nanotechnology within a field of medicine) focusing on developing new diagnostic and therapeutic platforms for various chronic pain states.
