Consistently and unambiguously representing data is the critical first step toward reusing the data for various purposes such as patient care, research, and outcome analysis. This course describes existing means and methods of representing biomedical data to achieve data reusability.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain why data standardization is important
- Explain the usage purposes, strengths, and weaknesses of the terminology systems covered in this courseb.
- Decide which terminology systems to use to encode the data in a particular domain
- Develop a simple domain ontology (application ontology) using Protégé
- Use terminology resources to manipulate textual data for research

- Class reading materials will be distributed before each session as necessary.
- A laptop computer will be required for 4 sessions including the final exam (students who do not have a laptop computer should contact the instructor before the course begins).
