In Medical Education

  • In Doximity rankings released in January 2015, UC San Diego is in the top ten in the West in internal medicine training and in combined or subspecialty residency training in anesthesiology, dermatology and pediatrics.
  • In the 2018 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Schools guidebook, the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is #18 in research and #12 in primary care
  • The HIV/AIDS specialty program, ranked separately, is #11.

  • The HIV/AIDS program (Division of Infectious Diseases and Owen Clinic) is 11th in the nation in a separate ranking. There is a multidisciplinary HIV outpatient rotation at the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest.
  • UC San Diego Health offers world-renowned clinical programs in pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolic diseases, pulmonary and GI interventions, cardiac electrophysiology, HIV, and stem-cell transplantation.
  • Becker's Hospital Review ranked UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest among “100 Great Hospitals in America” in 2015.
  • The Leapfrog Group, an independent industry watchdog, named UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest a "Top Hospital" in America in 2015.
  • Both UC San Diego Health Hillcrest - Hillcrest Medical Center and UC San Diego Health La Jolla - Thornton Hospital and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center received "A" grades in hospital safety from the Leapfrog Group in Spring 2016.
  • Truven Health Analytics named UC San Diego Health one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals in 2015.
  • Healthgrades® honored UC San Diego Health with a Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence in 2014, rating it in the top 5% for comprehensive high-quality care across numerous specialties based on clinical outcomes.
  • The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy program of the Division of Gastroenterology is recognized for its excellence in the Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
  • In 2010, our Chronic Kidney Disease Program became the first such program in the nation to receive the Joint Commission's disease-specific Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality.
  • UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is the only hospital in San Diego to be featured in Becker’s Hospital Review list of “70 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs.”
  • UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center received the American Cancer Society Healthcare Partner of the Year Award.
  • The Breast Cancer Unit at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is the first hospital-based program in California to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers

UC San Diego Health is one of six “Most Wired Advanced” hospitals in the nation, according to new findings released in July 2015 by Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN), a publication of the American Hospital Association. The designation highlights institutions that have most effectively leveraged information technologies to improve performance and patient care.

New Medical Education-Telemedicine Building at UCSD

Telemedicine

Residents receive training and deliver healthcare in the Medical Education-Telemedicine Building opened in 2011 (above).

The facility houses the Southern California Telemedicine Learning Center and equips many education and patient care efforts including the application of telecommunications and information technology to overcome healthcare disparities.
