Residency Program

Welcome to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSD. We are excited that you have chosen Orthopaedics as your specialty and hope you will find the field as challenging and satisfying as we do.

Orthopaedic Surgery has developed many areas of specialization and we strive to provide a training program that is flexible enough to prepare our residents for both general and specialized orthopaedics.

In order to achieve this goal we have created a training program that provides residents with effective hands on development in such areas as joint replacement and allograft surgery, spine surgery, hand and microvascular surgery, replant surgery, foot & ankle surgery, pediatric orthopaedics and sports medicine, while maintaining comprehensive training in general orthopaedics. Our program is also geared toward individuals interested in academic orthopaedics. The program includes a mandatory year of clinical or basic research.

We continue to attract candidates with outstanding qualifications from top training centers around the country. Each year we receive several hundred applicants for four incoming positions. The quality of applicants is outstanding.

We look forward to receiving your application and wish you the best of luck in the future.
