Education and Training in Child Neurology

The Division runs an ACGME-accredited training program in pediatric neurology in conjunction with the adult neurology training program at UC San Diego Medical Center and School of Medicine.

Residents rotate at UCSD Medical Center and the San Diego Veterans Administration Medical Center for adult neurology training, and at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego for pediatric neurology training.

The average daily inpatient neurology census is 5 patients on the neurology ward, 5 patients on the rehabilitation service, and 10 patients on other hospital services. The pediatric neurology service sees an average of 15-20 new inpatient admissions and consultations per week.

The outpatient rotation consists of treating both new and return child neurology patients 5 days per week. The child neurology outpatient service sees about 12,000 patients per year.

Graduate students and postdoctoral research fellows are also an active part of our teaching activities. Faculty members participate in several graduate programs, including the UCSD Neurosciences Program, the UCSD-SDSU Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, the UCSD-SDSU Joint Doctoral Program in Speech-Language Pathology, and the UCSD Graduate Program in Cognitive Science.

A Neuromuscular Pathology Conference is held at Rady Childlren's Hospital with clinicopathological correlation (CPC) on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 a.m.

In addition:

  • Medical students receive clinical training on an inpatient and outpatient basis in our Child Neurology program.
