Vice-Chair Corner:

Residency Program Update

by Mark Sawyer, MD, Residency Program Director

Our newest residents started in the Residency Program on Monday, June 27th. The program would like to extend our deepest thanks to all the faculty who have helped with this process by interviewing applicants and reviewing files. Without their help we could not have selected such an excellent class of incoming residents. To see photos of the incoming class, click here

From the more general education perspective this is also a time of year where potential curricular and scheduling changes are being considered for our residents and students. Our residency curriculum is excellent, but could use more elective time to allow our residents to customize their experience and participate in research. Chris Cannavino is our 3rd year medical student Clerkship Director and also organizes the 4th year medical student experiences in Pediatrics. He continues to refine both, the result of which is that many UCSD medical students choose pediatrics as a career and our residency program is able to attract the top UCSD students.

Under the direction of Chris Cannavino, one exciting new program is the Master Clinician Program which started this March. The program's goal is to improve medical students' clinical skills through a combination of direct clinical observation, structured feedback, physical examination rounds, and clinical reasoning sessions. Some of our department's most decorated clinician educators will act as Master Clinicians to mentor students and develop educational curricula.

We all really appreciate the support of the educational mission of our department by the faculty and know that it takes extra effort and time commitment out of already very busy schedules. The students and residents also appreciate the excellent teaching they get at UCSD/RCHSD. It is exciting to be involved in shaping the pediatricians of the next generation.
