Message from the Chair

Gabriel G. Haddad, MD

Dear Department Members,
I'm delighted with the recent announcement that UCSD's Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) is to receive a five-year Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) for approximately $52 million from the National Center for Advancing Translational Science, as part of the National Institutes of Health. The new award supports the expansion of the CTRI-mentored career development program to support young faculty members and funded research experiences for medical and pharmacy students; development of a Phase I unit at the Center for Clinical Research; expansion of biomarker and biocomputational capacity; new infrastructure to speed the regulatory processes for reviewing research involving human subjects; and new informatics solutions to help researchers recruit for clinical trials. Additionally, this grant will enable the creation of the Center for Lifespan Research, which will bring together investigators of childhood health, aging, and lifespan transitions. Led by our own faculty, Christina Chambers, PhD, MPH, the unit will develop infrastructure to support Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego, the UC San Diego Women's Center of Excellence, the Stein Institute of Research on Aging, and numerous other centers such as those focused on autism and cystic fibrosis. Mark Sawyer, MD

Mark Sawyer, MD
Vice Chair, Education
Director, Pediatric Residency Program

The academic year is well underway now with the residents settled into their new roles. I will be assigning general faculty mentors to all and for residents who have expressed an interest in research I will also try to pair them up with faculty engaged in research in the resident's area of interest. The mentor role is an important one at this stage in the residents' careers so I am hopeful that if you are asked to serve as a mentor you can find the time to meet with them regularly. I want to thank..... Read the full story here.

Faculty Salary Letters

Pen and Paper

Salary letters will be issued once the 1.5% general increase for eligible academic personnel is implemented. At this time, we do not know how salary components (X, X', Y, Y') will be impacted due to this adjustment. Due to further delays at the UC Office of the President, local implementation of the 1.5% increase was rescheduled. It is anticipated that the increase, including retroactive adjustments, will be reflected on the October 1, 2015 paychecks.

Coverage Analysis for Clinical Research Involving Tests & Procedures

RCHSD is implementing the coverage analysis process on new clinical studies involving research tests and procedures to ensure that all billing is in accordance with Medicare guidelines. Although UCSD performs coverage analysis for its faculty doing research at UCSD, it does not do so for studies in which RCHSD is the performance site.
