Requirements for International Medical Graduates who wish to apply for Postgraduate Training in the UCSD Pediatric Residency Program
- Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL):
All foreign medical school graduates wishing to train in an ACGME approved program in California must submit an application for licensure to the Medical Board of California and provide evidence of satisfactory completion of specific written exams. Upon approval of all submitted material, the Medical Board of California will issue a Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL). The applicant must submit the PTAL through ERAS with the remainder of their completed application to our residency program before the November 1st application deadline.
- Visa Requirement:
Graduates of foreign medical schools, who are not US citizens or do not hold Permanent Resident status in this country, will need to secure a J-1 visa. We only sponsor the J-1 visa through the Graduate Medical Education Department.
- ECFMG Certification:
Foreign medical school graduates must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
Foreign graduates are required to register and submit their residency applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
All International Medical Graduates must take USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 and report the scores with their application through ERAS.
