Since receiving her PhD degree at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Dr. Ulupi Jhala has been conducting diabetes research for over 20 years. She completed her postdoctoral training at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla CA. Dr. Jhala joined the Department of Pediatrics to pursue independent research on islet beta cells. She is a frequent participant of the research grant review committee of the American Diabetes Association and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
Dr. Jhala has two parallel research interests. The first is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate beta cell death in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The second area of interest centers on identifyiing biomarkers for predicting type 1 diabetes before patients are diagnosed. The hope is to intervene early and prevent beta cell loss.
