The Champion of Diversity award is given annually to a faculty member or trainee within the Department of Psychiatry who has made significant contributions to diversity at UCSD or in the community via research, clinical activities, teaching, or community involvement. The Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce that this year’s trainee Champion of Diversity is Luz Garcini. As a graduate student in the Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, Luz has been particularly active in mentoring individuals from under-represented and non-traditional backgrounds including dozens of high school students, undergraduates and graduate students. She has also served the local community through outreach to undocumented Latino immigrants and South East African refugees. Her scholarly productivity is impressive. She has published over 10 journal articles, presented at 10 symposia, and has presented over 60 papers and posters at national meetings. Her research focuses on the study of health and well-being among underserved minorities, and her dissertation will look specifically at stress and anxiety among undocumented Latino immigrants in San Diego County. Finally, Luz has taken on leadership roles in many national organizations including serving as co-chair of the Ethnic Minority and Multicultural Health Special Interest Group for the Society of Behavioral Medicine and co-leader of the 2014 Diversifying Clinical Psychology Recruitment Event for the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology Programs. The Chair’s Advisory Committee on Diversity Issues is pleased to honor Luz Garcini with this award.
