The Champion of Diversity award is given annually to a faculty member or trainee within the Department of Psychiatry who has made significant contributions to diversity at UCSD or in the community via research, clinical activities, teaching, or community involvement.  The Department of Psychiatry is pleased to announce that this year’s faculty Champion of Diversity is Dr. Monica Ulibarri. Dr. Ulibarri has a strong record of publication of and extramural funding for research on the disproportionate impact of substance use and HIV/AIDS among ethnic minority women; she is one of the first researchers to study HIV-related behaviors in the context of the relationships in which they occur. In addition to her scholarly success, she has put a great deal of effort into helping minority undergraduate and graduate students. She has mentored undergraduates through the McNair Scholars program, and is the only Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (JDP) supervisor to supervise therapy conducted in Spanish.  She has participated in local and national scientific organizations regarding diversity issues, and last year received an American Psychological Association (APA) award for Early Career Distinguished Contributions to Racial & Ethnic Minority Psychology. We are pleased to honor an active member of the Department’s Diversity Committee with this award.
