March 2017 Teacher Spotlight

March 2017 Teacher Spotlight:

Stephen Groban, MD Stephen Groban, MD, H.S. Clinical Professor

“I am honored to be selected as teacher of the month. As I look at the previous honorees, I see that I have been involved with a number of them during their residency here at UCSD. As a teacher, that is an enormous gratification for me to have been a part of the training for those who are now recognized for their excellence and are now colleagues who I learn from. I am extremely fortunate to continue to be part of this cycle."
"Especially in my area of Addiction Psychiatry, there are many preconceptions and attitudes related to the patients. My goal in teaching is to help bring an approach to the patient that encourages the practitioner to view the patient in a more objective light and create a satisfying and effective interaction between the clinician and patient. Sharing new studies in the literature, and seeing interesting patients with the trainees maintains my own enthusiasm for the human experience we encounter. After 47 years in psychiatry, I continue to be fascinated with the field and with teaching."
