Medical Physics Residency

The UC San Diego Medical Physics Residency Program will be holding interviews Friday February 9 and Tuesday February 20 for a July 1, 2018 start date.

The objective of this residency program is to provide clinical training in radiation oncology physics within a structured clinical environment. Residents will participate in the clinical physics duties under the supervision of board-certified medical physicists. At the conclusion of the program, the resident will be able to demonstrate competency in all areas of radiation oncology physics and will be prepared to sit for the certification examination of the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics.

Physics Residency Training is a two-year program. The first-year resident will work closely with medical physicists responsible for clinical tasks in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Diego. A major goal during the second year is to develop independent thinking and confidence in making clinical decisions. One to four months will be spent on each clinical service to assure adequate experience in all clinical physics activities.

The UC San Diego Medical Physics Residency Program was inaugurated on July 1, 2007. We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP).

For detailed information regarding our residency including a further description of the program, please view the Medical Physics Residency Brochure or contact Jessica Bazo, program administrator, at jlbazo@ucsd.edu or 858-822-0941. For further information on the field of medical physics, please visit the AAPM website.

Requirements for Admission

We prefer that candidates have a PhD in medical physics from a CAMPEP-accredited program or a PhD in physics, biophysics, radiological sciences, engineering or a related field. You must be willing to commit two years to the residency program.

Application Instructions and Timeline

We will begin accepting applications for a July 1, 2018 start date on October 1, 2017.   This year UCSD is participating in the Residency Match program and will be accepting applications through the CAP system. Applications will only be accepted through the CAP system and only complete applications will be considered. The deadline for applications is December 8, 2017.
