Born in India, Dr. Sandhu received his M.B.B.S from Panjab University and his Doctor of Medicine (Radiotherapy) from the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research in Chandrigarh. His post-doctoral training included residency at that institution as well as at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York.

Dr. Sandhu has completed Fellowship in Brachytherapy at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom and a Fellowship in Radiosurgery from the University of Rochester, New York. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), he is also certified by the Royal College of Radiologists, London in Medical Radiotherapy and Oncology. Dr. Sandhu was recruited to the UCSD Department of Radiation Oncology in the summer of 2005.

Dr. Sandhu’s clinical and research interests focus on Lung and Prostate (Genitourinary) Tumors. In particular, he is interested in the application of novel radiotherapeutic approaches in these diseases including intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and 4-D computed tomography and respiratory gating. Dr. Sandhu actively participates in various tumor boards sponsored by the cancer center which helps to provide highest level of care for cancer patients and promotes advancement of clinical research. He is also an investigator for various research organizations sponsored and funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) including Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a national cooperative group focusing on clinical trials in radiation oncology.

Dr. Sandhu currently is the Medical Director for the department of Radiation Oncology. He also serves on the faculty of school of medicine as a Clinical Professor.Dr. Sandhu takes active interest in teaching and mentoring the medical students. He is a faculty advisor for medical students guiding and evaluating Independent Study Project and other scientific research activities. He also serves on the Recruitment and Admissions Committee (RAC) for the UCSD School of Medicine (SOM) participating in the admission process for potential medical students.

Dr. Sandhu has published extensively on a variety of topics related to clinical applications of radiation and other modalities in treatment of cancer. He has also been awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship in Cancer Research, the RSNA Roentgen Research Award and the American College of Radiation Oncology’s Howard H. Wong Fellowship. He continues to focus on efforts to implement new advances and paradigms in cancer treatment.
