Research Foucs

Dr. Kim's primary research interests include intracranial radiosurgery and implementing novel treatment techniques, statistical process control and risk assessment. She has published over 70 journal articles/abstracts and has been invited as a speaker at national / international meetings.

 

‚ÄčFor the past few years, Dr. Kim has been conducting research on risk assessment and process improvement in radiation oncology. Prospective risk assessment (example, FMEA) performed for the radiosurgery special procedure and identified the potential risks and improved the clinical procedure based on the research result. Also another branch of her research for risk assessment was the incident learning system. The summary of this research was our incident learning system, which enabled real-time tracking of errors in the radiation oncology clinic, and were useful and practical means of improving safety and quality in patient care. Regarding the process improvement, Six-Sigma was applied within a structured DMAIC model to improve the QA process. Research demonstrated how to analyze the process capability and how to determine which variable to target when tolerances had to be established for the QA process.

Grace Gwe-Ya Kim, PhD

Dr. Kim received her doctoral degree in 2001 at Yonsei University in her native Korea. After her graduation, she worked as scientific officer for 7 years in the Medical Device Safety Bureau at the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea. Dr. Kim completed her post-doc fellowship in the department of radiation Oncology at Stanford. She was recruited to join the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences at the UC San Diego in 2009. She currently serves as a reviewer on American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). For the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), she is a member of the Calibration Laboratory Accreditation Executive Committee and subcommittee, Task Group 262, Task Group 275, working group on RO-ILS and a vice-chair of Working Group on Prevention of Errors in Radiation Oncology.
