The Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery is a team of eight surgeons under the leadership of Dr. Michael Madani. We are known throughout the world for the pioneering research and innovative surgical therapy of our group. Since 1989, when our program began, we have performed more than 30,000 major heart and lung operations.

Inhibition of NOTCH3 Cleavage Reverses Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Animal Models, UCSD Researchers Find

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a form of high blood pressure in the lung's arteries, affects more than 100,000 people in the United States, causing approximately 20,000 deaths per year. UC San Diego researchers have discovered a key pathway that controls this proliferative process – the NOTCH3 signaling pathway.

UCSD's Lung Cancer Program Takes Off

The Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, especially in the surgical treatment of chronic pulmonary emboli through a procedure called pulmonary thromboendarterectomy. Now, the Division's general thoracic surgery enterprise is expanding to include increased access to highly specialized, multidisciplinary care for lung cancer patients; preventative screenings; and increasing use of minimally invasive and robotic techniques.
