Each year the Office of Faculty Affairs coordinates several workshops for Health Sciences faculty that cover a wide range of topics including faculty orientation, retirement, promotions, compensation, and space allocation.

New Faculty Orientation

For all recently appointed professors in Health Sciences. This session is held once in the fall and provides a brief overview of compensation and benefits, academic tracks, file promotion preparation, academic leave policy, and faculty development opportunities. Additional information and resources for new faculty are available on the Academic Affairs and Academic Resource Center websites.

Getting Promoted for Mid-Career Faculty

For all associate professors in Health Sciences. This session is held once a year in the fall. This session provides a brief overview of academic advancement to full professor. It also includes an extensive Question and Answer session with a panel made up of former CAP and SOMCAP faculty members, Senior Administration, Academic Resource Center Senior Analyst, and an Academic Affairs Senior Analyst.

For all assistant professors in Health Sciences, held once a year in the spring. This session provides a brief overview of criteria for academic advancement to associate professor. It also includes a Question and Answer format with a panel made up of former CAP and SOMCAP faculty members, Senior Administration, Academic Resource Center Senior Analyst, and an Academic Affairs Senior Analyst.

Hiring Staff in Academic Medicine

A new workshop for all Health Sciences faculty. This session provides an overview of hiring new staff, coordinating their appointment with Human Resources, as well as, hiring without bias training.

Topics include: Workforce Trends, Employee Engagement, HR Do's & Don'ts, Unconscious Bias, Behavior Interviewing, and Interview Notes.

Effective Management of Disruptive Behavior

For Health Sciences faculty in an official leadership or supervisory position at UC San Diego. This session is offered by experts in the field of Disruptive Behavior and provides an overview of the root causes of disruptive behavior, early diagnosis, creating a culture of cooperation, behavioral intervention, monitoring and documenting behavior objectively, and clarifying expected behavior and outcomes.

Faculty Research Space Allocation

For all Health Sciences faculty. Provides an overview of Health Sciences process for space assignments, discussion of relationship of grant funding to space, review the role of the Space Advisory Committee. Also includes an extensive Question and Answer session with a panel including the chair of the Space Advisory Committee and senior committee member, Space Management Senior Analyst, and an SOM department space committee member.
